Whistling Woods Amboli Retreat

A quiet stay on the edge of the rainforest

Set away from Amboli’s main road and surrounded by the forests of the Western Ghats, Whistling Woods is a small nature resort where the forest is quite literally outside your window. The property began as a homestay and has retained much of that character, with spacious cottages, garden rooms, verandas and hammocks tucked beneath a thick canopy of trees.

A home in the forest, rather than a resort built around itWhistling Woods was started with the idea of giving travellers a more personal way to experience Amboli and has grown into a small resort without losing that sense of being hosted rather than processed. The property sits on the slope of a forested hill, away from the traffic and bustle of the main road, and its cottages use local materials and architectural elements such as laterite stone, arches, Mangalore tiles and clay flooring.

The rooms are spacious and open towards the surrounding forest, with verandas, courtyards and gardens that make it easy to spend time outdoors. Birds are a regular part of the morning here, and the property’s hammocks and shaded corners are as much a part of the experience as the rooms themselves.

AMBOLI

Stay in one of Maharashtra’s last rainforest landscapes

Amboli sits high in the southern Sahyadris at around 710 metres above sea level and is home to one of Maharashtra’s few remaining evergreen rainforest landscapes. The heavy monsoon transforms the hills into a world of mist, streams, moss-covered trails and waterfalls, while the forests remain rich in birds, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies and other wildlife through the year.

This biodiversity is what makes Amboli different from a conventional hill station. You do not have to travel far from the town to find yourself surrounded by forest, and even an ordinary walk can become an opportunity to notice something small moving through the undergrowth or hear a bird calling somewhere above the canopy.

FOOD

Simple, home-style meals after a day outdoors

Food at Whistling Woods is part of its homely character, with guests describing the meals as fresh, simple and homemade.

For KTC, this fits naturally into the way we like to experience Amboli. The focus is less on elaborate resort dining and more on having a good meal after spending the day outdoors, with the flavours and ingredients of the region forming part of the stay.

What People Say

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Ogles Whistling Woods, Amboli. The hospitality here is outstanding, right from the warm and friendly welcome by the owner. The rooms are amazing, spacious, and kept exceptionally clean. What truly stands out is the collaborative staff—they are always ready to help and cater to your every need with a smile. We preferred vegetarian food during our stay, and the meals were fantastic! As a helpful note for future travelers, they keep their veg and non-veg preparations strictly separate, which we highly appreciated. If you are planning a visit to Amboli, I highly recommend staying here. We would gladly visit again!

Awesome experience at Whistling Woods. We booked 3 rooms for a Family stay on Nov 13 and 14. Mr Hemant Ogale(owner) is a gem of a person. He is very knowledgeable and is a dedicated nature lover. He was kind enough to take us on a tour of the nearby Butterfly garden in Amboli and enrich us with his experience and knowledge about butterflies - Truly a Memorable experience. Rooms are beautiful and peaceful. They serve home-cooked food + Restaurant food based on your order and its excellent. We had a minor insect issue with our room - but they managed it well and alotted us a different room promptly and we were at ease. Highly recommended for a Peaceful and Blissfull family stay.

Four of us stayed here for two nights in peak monsoon this year (July 2023). It was our lazy leisure trip and we wanted to spend some time enjoying the rain. Glad that we made a decision to book Whistling Woods Rooms: We went for Malabar Peacock and Red Helen. Room sizes were big enough with all the required amenities. The washrooms were spacious and clean. ACs were missing but we didn't need it at all. Breakfast: This was the best part. Pohe, Upma, Sheera, Omelette everything was delicious Service: Up to the mark. No complaints Location: 100-150 meters from the main road, still surrounded by a lot of greenery. It was peaceful and serene. The sound of rain was calming. Perfect for digital detoxing.

One the best stays in Amboli right at the edge of the famed forests. The setup of the stay appears very natural and blends in with the adjoining trees. Rooms are clean, equipped and cozy and cater to various budgets and choices. They have a small restaurant which serves some amazing food. The menu is limited but the food served is amazing. They do cater to special in food as per availability. The host Mr. Hemant Ogale is an immensely knowledgeable person and interaction with him enriched us about the flora and fauna of the area and the broader Western Ghats. He is extremely down to earth and helpful. His suggestions regarding local sightseeing and places helped us a lot. The stay is very close to the famous butterfly park and Amboli Waterfalls. Standout feature of this place is that they have tried their best to make the place sustainable and respectful of nature and the surroundings.

Experiences in Amboli

Website cover 2

Amboli, nestled in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, is one of the most diverse and ecologically rich regions in India. Known for its misty landscapes, lush greenery, and vibrant wildlife, Amboli is a haven for nature lovers, especially herping enthusiasts. “Herping” refers to the observation and study of reptiles and amphibians, and Amboli offers some of the best opportunities for such an experience in India.

Why Amboli?

Amboli is part of the Sahyadri Range, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional biodiversity. The dense forests, cool climate, and proximity to rivers and wetlands create the perfect habitat for a wide range of amphibians and reptiles, including many species endemic to the Western Ghats.

For those interested in herping, Amboli is a treasure trove of species such as frogs, lizards, snakes, and other reptiles. These creatures are often hidden away, and exploring Amboli’s diverse ecosystems allows one to witness these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.

Guided Treks & Trails by KTC

KTC can play a significant role in guiding nature enthusiasts through the intricate trails and dense forests of Amboli to witness the beauty of wildlife and conduct herping expeditions. Here’s how KTC can enhance the herping experience:

1. Expert Guides for Herping

KTC can organize guided herping treks where knowledgeable naturalists and herpetologists accompany participants. These guides have an intimate understanding of Amboli’s flora and fauna, ensuring that trekkers are led to the best spots to observe various species without disturbing their natural habitat. The guides can help identify different reptiles and amphibians, explaining their behavior, habitats, and the threats they face.

2. Night Trekking and Amphibian Exploration

Many of the amphibians and reptiles in Amboli are nocturnal, making night treks an essential part of the herping experience. KTC can offer special night trails, where participants explore the forests after dark, equipped with torches and the expertise of a guide. Amboli is home to rare species like the Amboli Toad and the Malabar Pit Viper, which are most active at night.

3. Ecological Education & Conservation

KTC can provide a platform for education on the conservation of reptiles and amphibians. Many of the species in Amboli are threatened due to habitat loss and climate change. KTC’s guided tours can include informative sessions about the importance of these creatures in maintaining ecological balance, and how preserving Amboli’s forests is crucial for their survival.

4. Photography Expeditions

For wildlife photographers, KTC can organize special photography treks, where enthusiasts get a chance to capture these elusive creatures in their natural environment. These expeditions can include photography workshops, where KTC’s expert photographers guide participants on how to photograph amphibians and reptiles, ensuring both the safety of the wildlife and the quality of the images.
