Nakhwa Homestay is a small, newly built homestay run by a local fisherman in Kerwadi, a quiet part of Shiroda village near the Chauguleshwar temple, in Vengurla taluka of Sindhudurg. On this coast a nakhwa is the man who owns and skippers a fishing boat, and the name is a fair promise of what you get: a stay with the sea and its catch close at hand.
The rooms are simple and spotless: a wide double bed, fresh linen, bright curtains, a ceiling fan and air-conditioning. Upstairs, a long verandah looks out over Mangalore-tiled roofs and coconut palms.
Shiroda sits at the southern tip of Maharashtra’s coast, a long run of beaches from Aravali and Sagarteertha down to the mouth of the Terekhol creek, with Redi’s Yashwantgad fort across the water. Nakhwa is a calm, affordable base to explore it from.
