Surangi (Mammea suriga) is a native Western Ghats tree found in parts of Sindhudurg, including the landscape around Asoli. The tree flowers only once a year, for a short duration, making the bloom both seasonal and limited.
What makes Surangi significant is its economic role. As reported in regional agricultural studies and local reporting, the seasonal harvest of Surangi flowers provides a substantial source of income for villages in Sindhudurg. The flowers are traded beyond the district and reach larger domestic and international fragrance and botanical markets. Demand exists precisely because supply is limited by the tree’s natural flowering cycle.
