Swiftlet Nests along the Vengurlaโ€“Nivati Rocks

The sea caves and steep rock faces around Vengurla and Nivati are known nesting sites for swiftlets.

Swiftlet nests are built almost entirely from the birdโ€™s saliva, which hardens on contact with air and allows the nest to cling to vertical rock surfaces. These nests are typically attached high inside dark caves or on sheltered cliff walls, safe from predators and strong sea spray.

Nesting activity usually increases during calmer sea conditions, when birds can access the caves repeatedly to build and maintain their nests. The presence of these nests indicates undisturbed rock habitats and stable coastal conditions.

During the boat safari, some nesting sites may be visible from a distance. We do not approach caves closely or allow entry, in order to avoid stress to the birds and damage to nesting areas.

Research of 2019-23: An ongoing study by the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) — funded by the state forest departmentโ€™s Mangrove Foundation — has given researchers key insights into the biodiversity of the Vengurla Archipelago in Sindhudurg district, known to harbour the largest congregation of Indian Swiftlets, a protected bird species endemic to Indiaโ€™s Western Ghats and Sri Lanka. The birds are found in the four caves between the New Lighthouse and Burnt Island. One of these caves, called Pakoli Ghal on Burnt Island, is where the Indian swiftlet nests and roosts in the thousands. During the study, SACON recorded 21 invertebrates in Pakholi dhol including spiders, beetles, crabs, moths and butterflies, dragonflies, crickets, christmas tree worms, silverfish and barnacles. The study identified five vertebrate orders including three birds- swiftlets, pigeons and martins along with one mammal (rodent) and reptile (Gecko).
