A rare coastal landscape shaped by geology, monsoon waves, and time.
The journey itself is part of the experience. Vehicles stop near the village, from where a 15-minute walk through quiet village paths and open landscapes brings you to the black sand pebble beach. We visit a few temples along the way.

A black sand pebble beach is formed when iron-rich volcanic rock breaks down into dark grains and smooth pebbles. Unlike soft white sand beaches, these shores are rugged, raw, and constantly reshaped by strong tides and seasonal currents.

What makes this beach unique

Naturally black sand and dark pebbles rich in iron minerals
Formed from basalt rock erosion, common to the Konkan coast
High-energy waves wash away lighter sand, leaving heavy, dark sediments
Smooth pebbles created by continuous wave action

A living, breathing ecosystem

These beaches often host ghost crabs, especially dark-colored ones that blend into the black sand. Their presence is a strong indicator of a healthy, low-disturbance beach ecosystem. You may also notice unique patterns in the sand created by retreating tides, wind, and mineral density

Black ghost crabs aren’t a different species. They’re ghost crabs adapted to iron-rich, dark pebble beaches, and their presence signals a healthy, low-disturbance shoreline.

Black sand beaches are relatively young beaches and reveal Konkan’s volcanic past and its untamed present.
